About Blackburn

Once dominated by cotton mills, Blackburn today is a diverse manufacturing centre and capital of the East Lancashire Region with excellent transport links. There is some fine architecture and notable historic buildings including the Cathedral Church of Blackburn Saint Mary the Virgin (Blackburn Cathedral), built in 1826 on the site of a Norman church. The town’s museum and art gallery contains the largest British display of European icons, priceless Japanese prints, and watercolours by Turner. Although not generally regarded as a tourist destination there are numerous visitor attractions in and around the town and it is close to open moors and countryside.
